“We travel because distance and difference are the secret tonic of creativity. When we get home, home is still the same. But something inside our minds has changed, and that changes everything.”
For me, travel has always been in my blood. There’s just something about wandering this world that leaves a feeling of accomplishment in my life. To see what daily life looks like for different cultures around the world and to gain a whole new perspective- I can’t remember ever not wanting to travel.
My grandfather passed away suddenly when I was just five years old. It was a huge shock to my family -especially my mom. They were very close and his death changed her. He lived his whole life never leaving his hometown. He always said, “later” and unfortunately for him, he never got his later. He never got to experience traveling the world like he always dreamed of doing. So from that day forward, my mom made it her goal to make sure I saw the world. She never wanted me to have regrets. She never wanted me to say, “later.”
And since the age of five, I’ve been all over this world. I’ve visited 23 states and been to 18 countries – and counting! She instilled in me at such a young age how important it is to live life to its fullest -to explore everything this world has to offer. I want to see as much as this world as possible. I want to get out there and jump outside of my comfort zone every once in a while. There’s always something to learn no matter where you go.
I’m forever grateful for my mom for opening my travel eyes so young. I was eleven years old the first time I went overseas. My mom, brother and I went to England for a month while I was playing soccer. Everyone thought she was crazy for bringing me to a foreign country at that age, for that long. But looking back I’m so thankful she gave me that experience. It changed my life.
I believe travel feeds and nourishes one’s soul. Everyone should travel, no matter how near or far you go. It will change you, I promise you. It will bring a whole new appreciation to your life. I travel for many reasons but my number one reason I wander this world is simple: I want to live out my grandfather’s dreams. I want to make him proud. I want to continue his life after death. I know he’s with me on every adventure. He inspires me everyday and I only hope that I can pass down my love of life, and travel to the next generation.
Who inspires you to travel?
